Poppins Book Nook: The Donkey who Carried a King with a free activity packet and a GIVEAWAY

  This month for Poppins Book Nook the theme was animals.  I chose the book The Donkey who Carried a King by RC Sproul.

     This is another excellent book by R.C. Sproul.  In it he shows how Jesus humbled himself as a servant, saving God's chosen from their sins.  

     The story brings to life a donkey named Davey who was chosen for a very special task.  He was to carried Jesus into Jerusalem.  This made Davey very proud.  He thought that he would be a special donkey now and would only be chosen to do special jobs.  Davey got very upset when he was put to work doing everyday tasks.

     Just a few days after his special task, Davey witnessed Jesus carry his own cross.  Barnabas, another donkey in the story, helped Davey to see how Jesus was a being a servant.  This helped Davey to see that he needed to do whatever job he was given with a happy heart.

     This story makes me sad and happy.  It reminds me of how God sent his precious son Jesus to earth, to live a sin free life and die on a cross so that I may go to Heaven.  It reminds me also how we are here to serve God with all of our hearts.  It also reminds me that every happy, sad, hard, and easy moment that we walk through on earth, it brings God glory and allows me to serve Him who is on most high.

DONKEY CRAFT

You need 2 clothes pin, a hot glue gun, a gray, and black marker.

Have them color the clothes pins gray.  Then add eyes and a nose with the black marker.

Then attach them together with the glue gun.

Finished project!

This would be a awesome book to read around Easter time.

FIAR-Cranberry Thanksgiving

Conner and I have really missed doing our Five in a Row book studies.    What better time than a week off to dive back into one!!  Cranberry Thanksgiving is a great resource about teaching kids not to judge a book by its cover.

Seeing if they float!!

I let him try and bounce them into a measuring cup then he cut them up to put in our stuffing.

Our art project was to do a watercolor silhouette.  I uploaded a picture of him onto my Windows Word program, enlarged it, and then printed it out.  We glued it on a piece of watercolor paper and them the painted around it.  It peeled off very easily.

For history, we studied the Pilgrims and he did this project.

We did an online slide show or a cranberry bog.  You can find that here.

They also have a free downloadable activity pack found here.

Then we made cranberry sauce.

Put 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water in a saucepan and bring to a boil.

Add cranberries and boil until they start to pop open.  Put on low for 10 minutes.

I like mine jellied, so I used my stick blender.

Put in a dish and refrigerate for about 3 hours.

All in all, a pretty good row!

     Welcome to another exciting week of reading the Bible in a year with your kids!  We will finish up Leviticus and move into Numbers this week.  I pray each one of your families is growing closer to Christ.

Week 8 printables.

Day 50 Leviticus 11-14

     Chapter 11 discusses what animals were clean and unclean.    
     Chapter 12 talks about ceremonial purification.  Directions to the priest to judge according to leprosy is discussed in chapter 13.  It also tells about how the leper must be disposed of and the garments worn.
     Chapter 14, tells us how to declare a leper clean and the sacrifices to be offered by him.

Day 51 Leviticus 15-18

     Chapter 15 is about the laws concerning ceremonial uncleanness.  Chapter 16 talks about the day of atonement.
     In chapter 17,  we learn that all sacrifices to the Lord are to be offered at the tabernacle.  He also tells us that they were not allowed to eat any animal or their blood that died a natural death.
     Chapter 18 discusses unlawful marriages and fleshly lusts.

Day 52 Leviticus 19-22

     These 4 chapters discuss the laws.  Chapter 21 concentrates on the laws concerning the priests.  Chapter 22 is about the laws concerning the priests and sacrifices.

Day 53 Leviticus 23-25

     In chapter 23, we learn about the feasts that God ordained. The feast of the Passover was to continue on for 7 days and the people were to be in prayer.  The feast of Weeks was held in remembrance of the giving of the law.  The feast of Tabernacles was in remembrance of them living in tents in the wilderness.
     Chapter 24 talks about oil for the lamps, bread, and the law of blasphemy.
     Chapter 25 talks about the Sabbath day of rest for the land in the seventh year.  It also brings up the year of jubilee in the 50th year.  Other things you will read about it the redemption of the land and houses, compassion towards the poor, and laws respecting servants.

Day 54 Leviticus 26-27; Numbers 1-2

     Promises upon keeping the precepts, threatening against disobedience, and God's promise to remember those that repent are in Chapter 26.
     We end Leviticus with Chapter 27, which discusses the laws concerning vows.  Those vows included those made with persons, animals, houses, and land.
     Chapter 1 of Numbers starts with the numbering of the Israeliltes.  The Levites were not numbered with them.
     In chapter 2, the order of the tribes in their tents is discussed.

Day 55 Numbers 3-5
   
     In chapter 3, the Levites are finally numbered by their families and then their duties are listed.  All first-born are then numbered.
     In chapter 4, the duties of the Kohathites, Gershonites, and the Merarites are told.
     In chapter 5, the uncleaned are to be removed from the camp.  Restitution is to be made for the trespasses.

     I am praying all of you have had a blessed week!  We got to spend our week at home and getting caught up with school and with our Bible reading!   This week you will finish up Exodus and start Leviticus!

Day 43  Exodus 29-32

     In chapter 29, we learn about the sacrifice and ceremony for the consecration  of the priests and the continual burnt offerings, with God's promise to dwell among Israel.
     In chapter 30, we read about the alter of incense, the brazen laver, the holy anointing oil, and the perfume.
     In chapter 31, Bezaleel and Aholiab are appointed and qualified for the work of the tabernacle.  Moses receives the tablets of the law.
     In chapter 32, the people cause Aaron to make a golden calf.  God is displeased and Moses intercedes breaking the 10 commandments and destroying the golden calf.

Day 44  Exodus 33-36

     In Chapter 33 we start with the Lord refusing to go to Israel and end with Moses desiring to see the glory of God.
     In chapter 34, The tables of the law are renewed.  It talks about the festivals and the vail of Moses.
     In chapter 35, we learn again about the sabbath being observed and the free gifts for the tabernacle.  Bezaleel and Aholiab are called to work.
     In chapter 36 starts the making of the tabernacle.

Day 45  Exodus 37-40

     In chapter 37 is about the making of the ark and the furniture of teh tabernacle.
     In chapter 38 we read about the alter, lavar, court, and the offerings of the people.
     In chapter 39 the priests garments are discussed and the tabernacle is completed.
     In chapter 40, the tabernacle is set up and Aaron and his sons are sanctified.  Moses performs all that God has directed him to and the glory of the Lord fills the tabernacle.

Day 46  Leviticus  1-4

     Chapter 1 discusses the offerings from the herds and flocks.
     Chapters 2-4 talks about the meat, grain, peace, and sin offerings.

Day 47  Leviticus 5-7

     In chapter 5, we read about various trespasses against the Lord.  Chapter 6 discusses trespasses against out neighbor and again reiterates the burnt, meat, and sin offerings.
     Chapter 7 concludes the offerings.

Day 48  Leviticus 8-10

     The consecration of Aaron and his sons and the offerings of the consecration are in chapter 8.  This leads into chapter 9 where the first offerings of Aaron for himself and the people are put on the alter and Moses and Aaron bless the people.
     In chapter 10, Nadab and Abihu die and Aaron and his sons are forbidden to mourn for them.

     It has been another crazy week here!  We were back in the Children’s Hospital for 3 days because he stopped breathing again.   They think it could be seizure related, but we will see.  Tuesday morning was a weak time for me.  While Ezra was sleeping, I pulled up the online ESV Bible and allowed God to show me His word.  Here is where I was brought to:
 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:4-7

     I am truly blessed with the peace God gave me when I read  this!  It was like waves of peace just took over and my strength was there!  I love God and his awesome irresistible grace.

     This week we will continue on with Exodus.  I did forget one thing last week, if you have chosen to memorize the books of the Bible in order like we are; you need to add Exodus to your board!

Day 36 Exodus 5-9

In these chapters, we will learn about the first 7 plagues that God sent to the Egyptians.

In Moses first encounter with Pharaoh, he asked if the Israelites could go on a three day journey to sacrifice in the desert.  Of course Pharaoh said no and then asked that there be no hay brought to the Israelites for their brick making.   They were forced to travel the countryside to find it.  The Israelites were weak; they did not fully trust God.

On Moses and Aaron’s second encounter, God told them that he would harden Pharaoh’s heart.  To prove to Pharaoh that God was the true God, he put his staff down and it became a serpent.  Of course the magicians were able to duplicate this, but Aaron’s staff swallowed up all of the other staffs.

The plagues that God put upon the Egyptians cut at the core of their religion.  In the first plague, God turned the water turned to blood.   This plague lasted 7 days.  The Egyptians had to dig new wells to get water to drink.   The magicians were able to replicate this act.

In the second plague,  God sent the frogs by the millions.  The magicians could replicate this plague also.  In the third plague, Pharaoh had no warning.  God sent lice to cover all man and beast.  The magicians could not change dust into lice.  They then knew that this was the hand of God causing these things.

In the fourth plague, God sent flies.  Beginning with this plague, God separated the Egyptians from the Israelites.  This was so the Egyptians would know that the God of Israel was sending these plagues.

In the fifth plague, God sent a plague over all the livestock of the Egyptians.  The Egyptian livestock died, but the Israelites’ livestock lived.

In the sixth plague,  ashes were thrown up into the air and became boils on the Egyptian people and animals.  This caused the magicians to leave since they looked so terrible.

In the seventh plague, God sent hail.  God had given warning for this one.  He had said to take the livestock in.  Those who feared the Lord did as he commanded.  This plague also destroyed he trees, plants, barley, and flax.

Day 37 Exodus 10-13

In the eighth plague, God covered the whole land with locusts.  Every green thing was destroyed at that time and Egypt became a desert.

In the ninth plague, God sent a special darkness.  This is like a picture of death.  This darkness could be felt and lasted three days.  The Israelites had a special light in their homes.

In chapters 11-12, we learn about the Passover.  Moses instructed the people of Israel what to do.  On the tenth day, they were to chose a perfect lamb (a picture of Christ), one year old, and separate it from the rest.  On the 14^th day, they were to kill the lamb and catch the blood.  With hyssop, they were to use the blood and put on both sides and the top of their doorways.  They roasted the lamb over a fire with a bitter sauce and unleavened bread.  They were to eat this meal standing up, packed, and ready to go.

At midnight, God killed every firstborn child and animal in Egypt.  Those homes where the blood was on the doorposts, God passed by (where Passover came from).  The Egyptians gave their jewels, money, and clothes to the Israelites.   About 2 million people left Egypt that night.

 When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. Hosea 11:1

God led the Israelites to the Red Sea.  He went before them with a pillar of cloud during the day, and a pillar of fire at night.

Day 38 Exodus 14-18

The Israelites set up camp by the Red Sea.  The heart of Pharaoh was once again hardened and he came with his whole army.  The Israelites complained, showing once again their lack of trust in the Lord.  The Lord put a pillar of cloud and put it between the Israelites and the Egyptians.  Moses stretched out his staff over the sea.  The Lord sent an east wind that blew all night that separated the waters and made the land dry for them to walk upon.  This is a picture of baptism.

and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 1 Corithians 10:2

Egypt is portrayed as sin and Canaan (where they were headed) as heaven.  The Red Sea coming down upon the Egyptians is symbolized as separation of sin. 

After traveling for 3 days, the Israelites had used up all their water.   The water at Marah was bitter, but once again the people complained.  Moses cried out to the Lord, and he showed him a log that he threw in and it made the water good.

As they traveled into the wilderness, they ran out of food.  The Israelites complained once again.  They questioned why they didn’t die is Egypt, but were brought here to starve.  We need to remember that not all of the Israelites were God’s children.  They rebelled against God instead of trusting him.  Without the Lord, the Israelites would have died here had it not been for the manna that God sent for them.

After traveling 3 more days to Rephidim, and again the Israelites blamed Moses for what was happening to them.  They were still filled with sin.  They demanded water, instead of praying for it.  God once again showed them mercy and Moses his the rock with his staff and water came out of the rock.  This is a picture of Christ.

and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. 1 Corinthians 10:4

At the end of chapter 17, we see how the nation of Amalek (from the line of Esau) attacked them from behind.

Remember what Amalek did to you on the way as you came out of Egypt, how he attacked you on the way when you were faint and weary, and cut off your tail, those who were lagging behind you, and he did not fear God.  Deuteronomy 25:17-18

Moses called Joshua to lead the army.  Whenever Moses held up the staff, the Israelites prevailed, but whenever he put his hands down they lost.

In chapter 18, we see Moses reunited with his father-in-law Jethro.

Day 39 Exodus 19-21

We see the Israelites arrive at Mt Horeb (Mt Sinai).  They had been traveling for 3 months.  Moses went up the mountain and listened to God to know what to say to his people.  Moses commanded them to clean themselves and on the third day the Lord would come to them.  God spoke the 10 commandments.  Moses became a mediator between the people and God, since the Israelites were afraid they would die.

Day 40 Exodus 22-24

Moses continues to read from the laws from the book of the covenant that he had written.  They told the people how to live and how to treat each other; wives, children, servants, animals, and land.

In chapter 24, we see Moses built an alter at the foot of the mountain and offer burnt offerings to the Lord.  He took some of the blood and threw it on the people as a symbol of the cleansing of their sins.  Then Moses, Aaron and his 2 sons, and 70 other men went on the mountain to eat and drink in the presence of the Lord.

Day 41 Exodus 25-28

In these chapters we see God gave Moses exact directions for building the tabernacle.

     I want to thank each and every one of you that prayed for my little boy last week.  We spent 5 days in 2 different children's hospitals.  We got to come home for almost 18 hours before I took him to follow up with our doctor and he stopped breathing and turned blue in her office.  They never did find anything wrong with him, I am just so happy that we are all under one roof now and seem to be healthy!!

Week 5

Day 29    Job 25-28

     In chapter 25, Bildad gives his third speech.  He agrees with Job that no man can be righteous.  God is altogether holy.  In chapter 26-28, Job uses a series of images that he has no righteousness of his own.  It is a gift from God.  Wisdom is also a gift from God. 

Day 30     Job 29-32

      Chapters 29-31, we are listening to Job.  In the preceding chapters, Job’s friends are all very close in age to Job.  But, there was a younger friend also present.  In chapter 32, Elihu comes into the conversation.  He is very angry towards Job’s friends.

Day 31     33-36

     Elihu continues on with his speech.  He offers to reason with Job.  Elihu blames Job for charging God with unfair.  God can never be unfair.  He is all powerful and all knowing.  He knows all things before they are going to happen.  All things, whether good or bad, are all meant to glorify God. 

Day 32     Job 37-40:1-5; Psalm 19

     Elihu observes the power of God, how great God is, and how God is to be feared.  In chapter 38, God calls upon Job to answer why he was assigning meaning to the events that took place in his life.  God is asking Job how he can determine what is good and what is bad.  Who are we to argue with God.  In chapter 40:3-5, Job finally realizes that he has gone too far.

Day 33     Job 40:6-24; Job 41-42; Psalm 29

     As we conclude the book of Job, we learn that Job repents to God.  All of his questions are gone.  God rebukes Job’s three friends.  God also restored all of Job’s wealth.

Day 34     Exodus 1-4

     In Exodus 1, we see that Pharaoh didn't want the Israelites to thrive.  We first see how he made them slaves and forced them to make bricks.  Then he told the midwives to kill all the Egyptian male babies.  They did not because they feared God.

     We see Moses born in chapter 2.  His mother could hide him for 3 months and then put him in a basket to float down the river.  The princess who found him called him Moses  “because I drew him out of the water.”    We know very little about the first 40 years of Moses life. 

And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.  Acts 7:22

     At age 40, he left the house of Pharaoh.  After a series of events, Moses would not go back to Pharaoh, and his own people didn't want him.  He went to the desert.  In the desert he married Zipporah, Jethro’s daughter.

     When Moses was 80 years old, he led Jethro’s sheep toward Mt. Horeb.  He saw a bush that was burning, but was not burning up.  God told him that he was going to take the Israelites out of Egypt just like he promised.  Three times Moses made an excuse to not go back to Egypt.  Moses was weak, but God was merciful.  He promised Moses that he would send Aaron who would be Moses’ speaker.
