Lesson 32 Kingdom Protista

For this lesson, he made a Paramecium.  He traced his shoe on a piece of paper and then he glued on pieces of yarn to represent the cilia.

Lesson 33 Kingdom Monera and Viruses

For this lesson, we did an experiment on how germs get spread.

I had him put lotion on his hands.  Then I put a pinch of glitter on one.

I had him make a fist with that one hand.

Then, I had him put his hands together.

I then gave him a paper towel to see if it all came off.  He found out it didn't!

He washed his hands with soap and water.

All gone!!

Answers in Genesis: The World of Animals Unit 5 Other Invertebrates Lessons 27-31

Lesson 27 Mollusks

For this lesson, we looked at some different shells.

We then did an experiment with dissolving one of the shells.

We covered the shell with vinegar and set it aside to watch!

10 hours later, you can see some of the shell coming apart.

We kept adding vinegar, up until about 4-5 days before this picture was taken.  Oops!  I forgot!  This is 21 days later and you can see how the vinegar has eaten away at the shell.

Lesson 28 Cnidarians

For this we made a jellyfish in a bottle.

You will need a water bottle, thread, and transparent plastic bag.

Tie thread around the head portion, then cut the bag into strips.

Fill the water bottle while putting the plastic bag into it..

Now you have a jellyfish!

Lesson 29 Echinoderms

Draw a starfish on a paperplate.

Cut it out.

Paint!!

Lesson 30 Sponges

For this lesson we checked out how much water a sponge would hold.

Lesson 31  Worms

For this lesson, I made a worm picture and let him color it and put some worms in the paths.  You can find this here.

Lesson 20 Invertebrates

I gave him a piece of string to show him the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates. 

Lesson 21 Arthropods

We made a bug out of a wine cork and 3 toothpicks broken in half.  Then, I rubbed it on a bar of soap.

When you put it in a bowl of cold water, the insect will skim the water.

Lesson 22 Insects

We made a dragonfly.

Lesson 23 Insect metamorphosis

1st he painted a piece of an egg carton and then we put it on a coffee filter.  This makes it a butterfly.

Then, put it inside a paper towel rod, now you have a cocoon.  When you pull it out, you go from a caterpillar to a butterfly.

Lesson 24 Arachnids

I gave him a piece of black construction paper and had him make a spider web.

Lesson 25 Crustaceans

Crab made with a cd.

Lesson 26 Myriapods

Lesson 14 Amphibians

I had him draw a picture depicting the life of a frog.

Lesson 16 Reptiles

Turtle drawing with different lines.

Lesson 17 Snakes

For the snake, I drew it out and then had him cut it out.  Then, he decorated it.

Then, we took a ruler on our dog, and created static.

He became a snake charmer!!

Lesson 18 Lizards

For this lesson we talked about camouflage.  I laid out 3 pieces of construction paper and 3 matching duplo legos.

Lesson 8 Birds

For this experiment on lift you need a glass jar and a ping pong ball.

He covered the jar with his mouth and blew into it.

This causes the ball to lift off of the bottom of the jar.

Lesson 9 Flight

For this lesson, I gathered some chicken feathers out of our coop.  We discussed  the difference between feathers.  Bird's have flight feathers and downy feathers.  He dropped each one from shoulder level.  He seen that the flight feather cut through the air faster than the downy feather.

Lesson 10 The Bird's Digestive System

I got this kit off of amazon.  Conner wasn't to amused when I told him it was real owl poop, but it didn't take him long to start working it!

Practicing picking up seeds (pinto beans) with a beak like a duck!

Finally got it when we switched beaks!

Lesson 11 Fish
For this lesson and the next, I got a sardine from Whole Foods.

First, we determined that fish do not have eyelids.

We looked at their scales.

Lesson 12 Fins & Other Fish Anatomy

I got our fish back out of the refrigerator.

We inspected the gills and discussed how they expand and contract  as they remove oxygen.

I then cut into the fish to show the backbone.

Lesson 13 Cartilaginous Fish

For this lesson, we talked about how blubber keeps some animals warm in the cold water.

I had him put oil on one finger and leave the other one with nothing on it.  He said this 'naked' finger got cold faster!!
