Welcome to the new year of Poppins Book Nook!  I am excited to be participating again this year.  For some reason I really struggled trying to find a book for this months topic:  Where in the world?  After trying several different books form the library I finally landed on this one.

Daisy Comes Home
by Jan Brett

This story takes place in China and is about a little girl and her flock of chickens.  Perfect timing since we just recently got our new baby chicks.

Aren't they both cute!!

26 baby girls that are about 4 weeks old!

And some of our old girls roasting just like the ones in the story.

For the geography part of this lesson, I had him make the flag of China.  I gave him a piece of cardstock, some red tissue paper, glue, and some gold stars and let him go!  I thinned the glue down with some water so that he could just paint brush it on.

The next thing we worked on was basket weaving.  In the book, Mei Mei has a basket that Daisy the chicken likes to sit in.  I cut a paper grocery bag up into strips.

Weaving the bottom.

Folding the sides up once we get our base done.

Starting to weave the sides.

Once we got to the top, we started folding the edges down and taping it.

Adding the handle.

Completed basket!!

I have been trying to do more cooking lessons with Conner since he loves to help out in the kitchen.  So, we made Hamburger Stir Fry.

 Hamburger Stir Fry
1 pound hamburger
1 onion
1 shredded carrot
1 cup peas
3 eggs
3 cups cold rice (we used brown)
soy sauce
butter
garlic

Saute the beef and onions and set aside.

Next, add the eggs and some butter to the pan and cook. (I used eggs whites, since I seem to have a lot of those with the baby eating an egg yolk daily!)

Add the rice and saute.

Add the meat, peas, carrots, garlic, and soy sauce to taste.

Finished product.  So yummy!!

Be sure you check out all the other blogs that are participating in the Poppins Book Nook.  I can't wait to see what everyone else has been up to!

Answers in Genesis: The World of Animals Unit 6 Simple Organisms Lessons 32-33

Lesson 32 Kingdom Protista

For this lesson, he made a Paramecium.  He traced his shoe on a piece of paper and then he glued on pieces of yarn to represent the cilia.

Lesson 33 Kingdom Monera and Viruses

For this lesson, we did an experiment on how germs get spread.

I had him put lotion on his hands.  Then I put a pinch of glitter on one.

I had him make a fist with that one hand.

Then, I had him put his hands together.

I then gave him a paper towel to see if it all came off.  He found out it didn't!

He washed his hands with soap and water.

All gone!!

Keepers of the Faith-Knot tying class

Last summer, in our church, we started a Keepers of the Faith club.  You can find out more about this awesome club and all they have to offer by visiting their website here.  (Not an affiliate link.)  For this month’s lesson  I chose to do knots.  We have been doing a lot of cooking the past several months, what with the holidays and such.  So, I thought this would be a nice change of pace!

The way we have set our club up is doing both the boys and girls together, lasting about 2 hours once a month.    We start out with having them practice their hymn.  For right now, we are working on Rock of Ages.  Then, we do a character trait.  For this month, I chose generosity.

I am using the Character Trails book by Character Concepts. (Not an affiliate link.)  I started out by asking them:

          What is generosity?

          How can we portray generosity?

Then I will go to the book, where it tells the story of The Good Samaritan in Luke 10.  I love this book, because not only does it base all character traits on the Bible, but it also links it to history and everyday life. There is also a set of questions at the end of each section and some practical projects.

Before we start our character trait today, I will be doing the set up for our Italian Knot Cookies.  They take an hour in the fridge, so plan accordingly!

After our character trait and cookie prep, I will start them on some basic knot information.  I will be covering:
  1. What knots are made of.
  2. What they are used for.
  3. Basic rope maintenance.
  4. The 3 parts to the rope.
  5. Some of the different types of knots.

I will then teach them some basic knots.  You can download a Instructional packet for this lesson here.  I am planning on teaching them the
Overhand Knot

Figure 8 Knot

The Reef Knot

There are instructions on the
clove hitch knot

and the Bowline knot in the packet also if you would like to teach them!

I also plan on using the story The Pirate Moore and doing the Mooring Hitch along with it.  You can find it here.  It is a very cute story!
After we practice our knots, we will finish our Italian Knot cookies and bake them.  We will then fill in our notebooks (Activity packet is here.)

Blessings!!
