Poppins Book Nook: To the Laboratory: Recycling and a giveaway!

Welcome back to another month of Poppins Book Nook!!
Jill R. Ehm-Creator's photo.
This month was a science theme.  This is always fun with a house full of boys!  We chose the book:

Recycle!
by Gail Gibbons

After reading this, we did a recycling experiment.

To do this experiment you will need:

about 8-12 weeks  We forgot about our second one and went 5 months! (opps!)
plastic bag opt
2 plastic tubs
enough soil to fill both boxes
water
2 sets of test material: newspaper, orange peel, foil, and plastic

Optional:  line your plastic tubs with a plastic bag then fill partially with dirt. moisten the soil.  Then add the test material to each tub and cover with dirt.

Place boxes in sunny location and keep dirt moist for the next 28 days.  Check the 1st one after 28 days.  Use a magnifying glass to check it out.
Here are our supplies.

Line the tubs with plastic bags.  You can omit this step if you want.

Putting 3 inches of dirt in the bottom of each one.

Moisten soil.

Add you material.

Cover with another 1-2 inches of dirt.

Moisten down.  Then sit outside in a sunny spot.  Don't forget to sent the kids out to moisten the dirt a couple of times a day (unless it rains).

This is a month later.  Our orange was starting to disintegrate.

Like I said earlier, we forgot ours!! This is 5 months later.

Plastic still the same.

Foil, still the same.

Paper was half way gone!  And, the orange was completely back to dirt.  I used organic oranges, so I would love to know that would change the process any on the peels.  We will have to try again and test that out!!

I also had him watch this video on Recycling by Reading Rainbow.
