Poppins Book Nook: The President and Mom's Apple Pie---Giveaway & Free Recipe

Jill R. Ehm-Creator's photo.

This month's theme was Presidents.  We chose the book The President and Mom's Apple Pie by Michael Garland.

This was a super fun story!

For this book, I decided to make my famous apple pie with Conner.  We had a blast in the kitchen!

You can find a pdf copy of the recipe here.

To make the crust you will need:
1 cup & 1 Tablespoon flour
½ t salt
1/3 c oil (I use coconut oil)
3 T water

First, you mix the flour and salt together. Then, pour the oil and cold water into a separate cup without stirring and add all at once to the flour.  Stir with a fork. Form into a ball and flatten slightly.

Roll between two sheets of wax paper.

Fit into a pie pan.

For the apple pie mixture you need:
4-6 c thinly sliced apples
½ c sugar
2 T flour
1 t cinnamon
Mix flour, sugar, and cinnamon. Add to apples and stir.

(I don't have a picture of this, as I make this mixture up in the summer when our apples ripen on the trees and freeze it.)

For the apple pie topping you need:
1 c flour
1 c sugar
1 stick (1/2 c) butter

Combine the sugar and flour, and then add butter.

 Cut until crumbly.

Put mixture into pastry and sprinkle with apple pie topping.

Cover edges with foil if needed. Bake at 375° for 30 minutes.

Let cool for at least 30 minutes, then cut and serve!

  2. Looks delicious to me! For some reason my strange kids won't eat pie. They will eat the filling or the crust, but not both. I guess that means more for me! lol

  3. I LOVE being in the kitchen with my boys. I love this post. You're not only teaching life skills, but also there's the opportunity to teach math, science, etc. Thanks so much for sharing this at the After School Linky!
