Answers in Genesis: The Human Body Unit 3 The Five Senses

This is the second part of unit 3 on nerves and senses.  Today we are centering in on The 5 senses.

All of the pages that you will need for the activities can be found here.

Lesson 15 The Five Senses

Our first experiment:  I had him close his eyes and I made a mark on his arm.  Keeping his eyes close, I had him mark with his finger where he thought I made the mark.

The second experiment:  I used a paper clip and made a u-shape out of it.  I had him close his eyes and I started with the 'u' about 2mm apart and then increased it to 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, and 12mm.  I then asked him each time I touched it to his skin if he felt 1 or 2 points touching him.  We made it all the way to 10mm before he felt 2 points.

Then I had him fill out this worksheet for each of the 5 senses.

Lesson 16 The Eye

The page you need for this is in the workbook.  You might consider printing on cardstock.  You will need a cd that you are not using anymore and a clear plastic bag.  Have the child color the eye lids.

Put the cd in the bag and tap onto the back side of the eye.  (Yes, I reuse paper around here!!)

Next, I taped a piece of paper on top of the plastic bag so that you can see the white part of the eye.

Finished product!

Lesson 17 The Ear

For this lesson, we did an eardrum experiment.  You need a large bowl, some uncooked rice, plastic wrap, and a cookie sheet or metal pan.

First, put plastic wrap over the bowl.  (This represents your eardrum.)  Next, put the rice on top of it.

Next, put the pan next to but not touching and bang on it.  The rice should jump each time you hit the pan.   This shows that sound can be a physical force thus creating sound waves to move the rice.

  2. That is pretty cool! I love the tactile way to learn about the senses instead of just reading about them in a book and answering questions. :) Awesome job!
