FIAR-Lentil

This week we rowed the book Lentil by Robert McClosky.  We really enjoyed the book!

 

I let him make the town out of his legos. 

He used mama bear to play the part of Lentil!

                                         

Coloring his picture of Ohio.

I gave him a charcoal pencil to make a drawing of his chose, just like the book. 

Letting him use his finger to smear it around.

Of course we had to try some lemons!!

He liked them!!

I got the harmonica out and we practiced playing some notes on it!  He really loved this part!  

I don't remember where I found this page at online.  I had him use his do-a-dot markers, and then gave him some gold stickers for the stars.

Of course we did many other things with this row, but these were the ideas that were my own so I thought I would share these!!

Birds and migration in the winter

Our study today took us on birds and their migration.  We also talked about other animals 

as well.  The first book we read was What is Migration? by Bobbie Kalman.

We then read the book Grady the Goose by Denise Brennan-Nelson.  This book is really

cute!  It also has a good moral to the story, as it discusses staying together with 

your parents!

We then set out to make a bird feeder for our feathery friends left behind for us to enjoy

this winter!

Materials needed:   birdseed

                              peanut butter

                              yarn

                              toilet paper roll with 2 holes punched in it

First, he spread peanut butter on the toilet paper roll.  

He then rolled it in the birdseed.

Snow Nature Study

Today we did a nature study on snow.  We started by reading the book

How do you know it's Winter by Allen Fowler.

Then we read the book Snowballs

by Lois Ehlert 

We then took a black piece of construction paper outside with our magnifying glass.   We set out to

find some 6 sided snow crystals.

Although you can't see it very well, we did manage to see some!  We also talked about how the snow crystals break down after landing.

I then gave him 2 small containers to put snow in.  I told him to put snow in one and just level it off.

The other one I told him to pack full.

I put them by our wood burner and asked him which one he thought would make

more water as it melted. 

 He guessed right with the packed one producing more water!

Snowflake Study with art project

Today we did a a study on snowflakes since it was snowing out!  

We read the books The Story of Snow by Mark Cassino

Then, we read the book The Tomten and the Fox by Astrid Lindgren

For the art project you need:    a sheet of water color paper

                                               water colors

                                               black crayon

                                               kosher salt, or some kind of course salt

He asked me if I could draw the picture for him, so I did.  You will want to draw it in black crayon.  

Once it is drawn, have them start painting.

When they get to the background of the picture, they are going to want to make sure, that there is enough water in their paint on the paper.  

Before it dries, make sure you sprinkle salt on the water colors.  We did this as he was painting instead of waiting until the end.

Let the picture dry.

After it dries, you can dust off the salt.  Some of the crystals will be left behind, but it will just add to the snow scene in the background!

Making the American Flag-Art project

In history we were studying Betsy Ross so I came up with this art project for him.  

First, you use masking tape mark to mark the the strips of the flag and the corner.  I had him use a white crayon to make stars in the corner.  Then I had him paint the strips.

He got a little crazy with his blue as you can see!

As you paint with the watercolors, the stars will shine through!

Valentine's Day

 I can’t believe it is almost Valentine’s Day!!  This was a scheduled week off for us, so we have been enjoying the sunshine and 50 degree weather!

To start our Valentine’s unit I read Let’s Show God’s Love on Valentine’s Day by Greg Holder and St Valentines’s Day by Clyde Robert Bulla.

I started him out by doing some copy work and some coloring.  This one came from here:

Then we made a book mark.  I got the picture of Jesus off of Google images.

Then we made a couple of Valentine's cards for his grandparents.  I got this from here:

The night before we did heart pipe cleaners in mason jars.  I filled the mason jars with boiling water and added 1/3 cup of borax to each jar.  We made the heart shapes and then I tied a string to them and then to a popsicle stick and put them in the jars.  

In the morning he pulled them out and was quite happy with the results!

We ended our lesson by reading Saint Valentine by Robert Sabuda.

Yesterday, little man and I went on a Valentine's date and ended it with Gigi's Cupcakes!!  Oh my gosh, the best cupcakes I have ever tried.  I am not an icing fan at all, but these were the best!!
