Geography Monday: Guatemala

This weeks travels bring us to Guatemala.

Here are some fun facts that we learned:

1.  Guatemala has the most population as the other countries of Central America.

2.  Over 50% of the Guatemalan population is of the Mayan empire.

Here are the books that we added to our study.  You can go  HERE  to see the other books that we add in.

Guatemala
by Kari Schuetz

Abuela's Weave
by Omar Castaneda

Guatemala in Colors
by Ann Stalcup

We learned that the ruby-throated hummingbird winters in Guatemala.  We love our hummingbirds in the spring and summer around here.  So, we made this craft using foam.

For our meal from Guatemala, we made Pollo y Pina.  This is from the Eat Your Way Around the World book.  We put it in the crockpot for the day.

That night we made Arroz Guatemalteco to put our Polo y Pico over.  This recipe is found in the New Trip Around the World book.

Yummy!!

Stay tuned next week as we travel to Belize!

Geography Monday: Mexico

Our next stop on our geography tour brings us to Central America and Mexico.

We found out some crazy things out Mexico:

1.  They eat grasshoppers!!  Well, at least some of them do still.  Yuk!

2.  If you are invited to dinner in Mexico, it is custom to show up 2-3 hours late.  They consider it rude if you are on time.  I am so glad that that is not a custom in the United States!

3.  Cocoa beans were used as money in ancient Mexico.  Could you imagine!  There would be no hot chocolate unless you were really rich!  My kids would not like that at.

Here are the extra books that we added in to our reading:

Mexico
by Megan Kopp

Mexico
by Adele Richardson

Under the Lemon  Moon
by Edith Hope Fine

P is for Pinata
by Tony Johnston

You can go HERE to see the other books that we use.

We ate some Mexican cuisine!

Enjoying some fried ice cream!

Making tin art.

We put aluminum foil over cardboard and taped it.

He made a design on a separate sheet of paper and then traced over it, over the foil.

I gave him some Sharpie markers and had him color it.

Stay tuned for next month when we visit Greenland!!

Word of the Year for 2016 : Transform January update

Well, today marks the end of the first month on my word of the year journey!!  Transformation.

You can go HERE to see the post!

So, I thought I would share with you my progress!!

SPIRITUAL WALK

Let's just say, this is still a work in progress.  I have definitely been praying a lot more.  I still need to get in the Word more.  I have a monthly devotion that will hopefully focus me more in that area.  It is Tabletalk put out by Ligonier Ministries.

PHYSICAL WALK

Well, in my last post I said I needed to lose at least 80 pounds.  I set my 1st goal at 75 pounds.  My monthly goal is 10 pounds a month.  This month I lost 11 pounds!!!!!!  I am super excited about this!  Praying and relying on God for His help in reaching this goal.

MOTHERLY WALK

Let's just say, getting down on their level and whispering how they are doing wrong works better than yelling!!  I feel that my yelling has been cut more than in half.  I think this month I will keep a count on how many times I lose it, to fully see the progress.  I feel that I only yelled a couple of times, but it was probably more.

WIFE WALK

Still fall asleep way too early!  But, this month so did he!  It must of been the month that we needed extra sleep.

WALK AS MY OWN PERSON

Who am I?  Praying I can answer this question better by the end of the year.  For right now, I am a sinner saved by grace.

TRANSFORM.

Verse of the Year:

Do not be conformed to this world, but be TRANSFORMED by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Romans 12:2  ESV

Art History Month #4: Claude Monet

Welcome back to this month's adventure into our Art History!  This month we did Claude Monet!

Week 1 we read

Claude Monet
by Catherine Nichols

For this project, he used his fingers.  He taped off the bridge 1st and then went about filling in all the open spaces.

Week 2 we read

Claude Monet
by Adam Klein

This project was found here.

Week #3 we read

Claude Monet The Painter who Stopped the Trains
by P.I. Maltbie

For this weeks project, I rolled up some tissue paper in a sorta flower like shape.  He then dipped them in paint and stamped them on the paper.  After drying, I put blue paint along the one side of the paper and he used a ruler to drag it across the paper.

Sorta looks like water lilies!?!

Week #4 we read

Claude Monet
by Mike Venzia

For this project I had him use chalk pastels.  These are becoming a new favorite in our home!
