Answers in Genesis: The Human Body Unit 6 Skin and Immunity

Lesson 29 Skin & Lesson 30 Cross Section of Skin

For this lesson, I put glue on 4 different areas of his skin.  Yes, we run around barefoot, so please excuse his dirty foot!

When it dried, we peeled it off.

Then I gave him a magnifying glass for him to check out his skin and to see how our skin was different in other areas of our body.

Lesson 31 Fingerprints

For this lesson, I rubbed the lead of a pencil and had him make fingerprints.  I used tape to pull them off of his finger and them placed them on a drawn out hand and on another piece of cut up paper.  Make sure you label the cut up pieces of paper so that YOU know which finger they go to (not the child).

Then, give him a magnifying glass, and see if he can match them up like the pros do!

Lesson 32 The Immune System

For this lesson, we talked about germs and the significance of washing our hands.  I had him put lotion on his hands.  Then, I put glitter on one hand.  I had him touch his other hand.

Now it is on both hands!  Germs spread quick!

We then set off to wash our hands.

All clean!

Lesson 33 Genetics

For this lesson, we did the worksheet that came with the curriculum.

Blessings!!

Answers in Genesis: The Human Body Unit 5 Heart and Lungs

Unit 5 Hearts and Lungs
Lesson 24 The Circulatory System

For this lesson I used this that is out of the workbook that is found here.

Have them sit quietly for a few minutes and see how many beats per minute their blood pumps.  Next have them run in place for a minute and count again.  Then do this again for 6 more minutes.

Lesson 25 The Heart

This is found in the workbook also.  I had him use embroider string to complete.

Lesson 26 Blood

Lego blood!
Red-red blood cells
White-white blood cells
green-platelets
water-plasma

Lesson 27 The Respiratory System

I had him hold his breath.

Then, I had him blow out the candles.

Lesson 28 The Lungs

For this lesson, my pictures are MIA.  What we did was I had him blow a balloon up as far as he could with 1 breath.  Then I used string to measure the circumference.  His dad did this and so did I.  Then we compared how much air our lungs held.

Answers in Genesis: The Human Body Unit 4 The Digestive System

Lesson 19 The Digestive System

For the first experiment, I gave him a cracker and asked him to chew it up.  I asked what it felt like in his mouth.  Then I gave him another cracker and told him to hold it in his mouth for 1 minute.  I asked him how this felt in his mouth.  Then we discussed how our mouth aids in the digestion process.

Next we demonstrated a stomach.  I put water in a ziploc bag and had him put a piece of bread in it.

Then we sealed it up.

Then he started to mash the bag with his fingers just like the muscles in the walls of our stomach do.

Then we colored and put our body parts on our fridge man!  These can be found in the workbook that is found in the link HERE.

Lesson 20 Teeth

I had him put this worksheet together on the tooth.  It can be found in the workbook that is HERE.

Lesson 21 Dental Health

For this lesson, we talked a lot about dental health.  I also had him make imprints of his teeth in play doh.

Lesson 22 Nutrition

We talked about eating a balanced diet and completed this worksheet found in the workbook.  See link above!

Lesson 23 Vitamins and Minerals

For this lesson, I kinda linked all together and went to the Bible.  We read John 6:35 and talked about how we are what we eat.  Not just food wise, but also other things that we intake like tv, radio, read, or hear.  There is healthy and unhealthy food, just like there is healthy and unhealthy things.  Read Ezekiel 3:1-4.  In it Ezekiel eats a scroll (Bible).  After eating it, he can speak the gospel.  Read John 6:27-35.  In these verses, we read that Jesus is our manna, our life.  We are what we eat.  We can eat junk food to our souls, or we can eat soul food.

Answers in Genesis: The Human Body Unit 3 The Five Senses

This is the second part of unit 3 on nerves and senses.  Today we are centering in on The 5 senses.

All of the pages that you will need for the activities can be found here.

Lesson 15 The Five Senses

Our first experiment:  I had him close his eyes and I made a mark on his arm.  Keeping his eyes close, I had him mark with his finger where he thought I made the mark.

The second experiment:  I used a paper clip and made a u-shape out of it.  I had him close his eyes and I started with the 'u' about 2mm apart and then increased it to 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, and 12mm.  I then asked him each time I touched it to his skin if he felt 1 or 2 points touching him.  We made it all the way to 10mm before he felt 2 points.

Then I had him fill out this worksheet for each of the 5 senses.

Lesson 16 The Eye

The page you need for this is in the workbook.  You might consider printing on cardstock.  You will need a cd that you are not using anymore and a clear plastic bag.  Have the child color the eye lids.

Put the cd in the bag and tap onto the back side of the eye.  (Yes, I reuse paper around here!!)

Next, I taped a piece of paper on top of the plastic bag so that you can see the white part of the eye.

Finished product!

Lesson 17 The Ear

For this lesson, we did an eardrum experiment.  You need a large bowl, some uncooked rice, plastic wrap, and a cookie sheet or metal pan.

First, put plastic wrap over the bowl.  (This represents your eardrum.)  Next, put the rice on top of it.

Next, put the pan next to but not touching and bang on it.  The rice should jump each time you hit the pan.   This shows that sound can be a physical force thus creating sound waves to move the rice.

Answers in Genesis: The Human Body Unit 3 Nerves

Unit 3 we will do in 2 posts.  In this post we are going to explore our nervous system and the brain.

You will need the workbook pages to complete some of the experiments.  You can download it here.

Lesson 11 The Nervous system

For this lesson, we tested how long it took for our nerves to transmit to our brain to move his hand.  He put his hand flat on the stove and I dropped the lego at different heights until we got the right level.

At 31 inches, he was able to move his hand away before he hit it.  Now we tried a few more times and his nerves got a lot faster at transmitting to his brain!!

Lesson 12 The Brain

For this lesson, We tested to see which side of his brain was dominant.  Remember the Right side of the brain controls the left side of the body.  The left side of the brain controls the right side of the body.

Then he put together a brain puzzle.  You can find it here.  I laminated it and cut it apart.

The workbook has a brain that he colored and we added it to our "man on the fridge"!

Lesson 13 Learning and Thinking

For this lesson I wrote the names of the colors with a different color.  He did great telling me what color the words as they were written.  He started messing up when I asked him what the words said.

Lesson 14 Reflexes and Nerves

For this lesson, we set out to see how fast he could react.

All I did was hold a ruler from the end and had him hold his thumb and index finger about 2 inches apart close to without touching the bottom of the ruler.  I told him that I would let go of the ruler and he was to catch it as fast as he could.  We did this 3 times and documented.  Each time got faster!  We did this with the left hand also!  The workbook has a sheet that you can fill out with your information you gather. (See top of page for link!)

Blessings!!
