FIAR: Warm as Wool

This was such a cute little book we done back int the spring!

Warm as Wool
by Scott Russell Sanders

Wool Experiment #1

You will need some:
 wool
2 pop cans
1 plastic bowl that is larger than you cans (I used a cool whip container)
hot water
2 thermometers

Boil the water and fill the pop cans 3/4s full of the hot water.

Put one of the cans in the plastic bowl and pack wool around it.  Leave the other sit to the side.  Put thermometers in both of them.  Write down the temperature of them ever 30 minutes for 2 hours.  Compare the temperatures of them at the end.  Our insulated one was 86 degrees, but our non-insulated one was 64 degrees.  This experiment shows why sheep's wool is so important to us and keeping us warm!

We practiced carding our wool.  For this I used 2 dog hair brushes and had him use them working them against each other.  Make sure you start off with a small amount of wool.  This takes time!!

The next step was to use a cotton ball and have him SLOWLY pull and twist on it to form yarn.

This was off of one cotton ball!!  Take you time!!

FIAR: Owl Moon

It has been awhile since we rowed a book!  Conner was excited to get to pick this one!!
Owl Moon
by Jane Yolen

I added this book in:
Owls
by Gail Gibbons

We had fun coloring these pages!
This coloring page can be found here.

We also did several of the pages in this nicely done packet that is FREE!!

I also had him do a moon flip book.

These are a couple of videos that I found that were good.  The first one is the audio of the book.  The second one is all about owls!

Earthquakes and plate tectonics

Earthquakes
by Franklyn Branley

Our next installment in Answers in Genesis Earth is on Earthquakes and plate tectonics.

The joys of crackers with peanut butter!!  First we showed the cracker  being broke and going under the other.  Of course, then he ate it!!

Then we slid the two beside each other.

Experiment #2  How underground rock formations affect how earthquake waves are transmitted.

Tie a string around a fork, hold the string ends by your ear.

Hit the fork with another utensil.

The vibration sound is really cool!!

This experiment was made by filling a canning jar with water and taping a marker around it so that it can touch the paper.  Pull on the paper.  It will make markings simulating the seismograph.

This experiment turning out much better.  We used a box and attached a string to a pen and taped it to the outside of the box.  Then we put play doh around the tip of the pen and placed a paper in the box.

Upon taping the box, the seismograph (pen) will make markings on the paper.
