Herbert Hoover

Herbert Hoover

President Hoover had a hard presidency.  The Great Depression was taking place.  Although, it was not his fault, people blamed him.  There were millions of Americans out of work who lived in tents or shelters.  They were called Hoovervilles.

Poppins Book Nook: Farms and giveaway!!

Welcome back to another month of Poppins Book Nook!!
Jill R. Ehm-Creator's photo.
This month was farms.  Considering we live on a farm and have done all things farm related with the boys, I took a different route with our book selection.  I ended up picking out 2 different books.

The first book was Pirates on the Farm
by Denette Fretz

This was such a touching story about a family with pirates as neighbors.  This book is full of pirates shearing sheep and harvesting corn with swords, animals walking the plank, and fish stew for their neighbors!!  Due to the damages caused by the pirates, they were asked to leave if they couldn't pay the charges.  The pirates neighbors came to the rescue and used their stash to pay the pirates debt.

We talked about being neighborly.  We talked about everyone is our neighbor.  I read him the Parable of the Sower.

And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”                ~Luke 10:25-27

Some pictures of my little man made up as a pirate.  This was from a dinner theater we did in Myrtle Beach this past February.

The next story we read was The Farmer
by Mark Ludy

This is such a touching story about a farmer we had to give up 2 of his best friends after horrible things happened in his life.  He never forgot to pray though.  God provided for his every needs.  In the end, the farmer runs to help his neighbors with a field fire.  He shows much humility when he shares his food with them so that they wouldn't starve through the winter.  By doing this, he got his cow and pig back.  We love this book!!

Erosion activity

One of the activities we did with our Answers in Genesis Earth was on erosion.

For this experiment you will need:

a large cookie sheet
sand
water
watering can

I put out cookie sheet in the sand box and added the sand.

Put the cookie sheet on an incline and have them slowly pour the water in one spot.

Make sure they do this very slowly.  They will see how rivers form.

They will be able to see how lakes and tributaries are formed also.
