Mystery of History Volume 1 Lessons 97-99

Lesson 97 The Second Triumvirate

Making a Roman Mosaic out of construction paper.

Lesson 98 Cleopatra

For this lesson, we made crazy construction paper crowns!

Lesson 99 Herod the Great

For this lesson we discussed the gifts that the wisemen brought to Jesus.  I even learned in this lesson!!

Gold was brought and symbolized a gift fit for a king.

Frankincense was used when the Israelites offered sacrifices.  Hence, Christ was the sacrifice for our sins.

Now, here is what I learned!!   Myrhh was used as an ingredient for embalming people.  It helps preserve the body.  Well, Christ's body rose in 3 days and never decayed!  All of these gifts symbolized what was going to happen to Jesus!

Poppins Book Nook: Cars: Five Fast Tales and a Giveaway

Welcome back to this months edition of Poppins Book Nook!

Conner is finally starting to read  a little, so I had bought some readers that interested him.  So, this month we worked our way through Cars:  Five Fast Tales.  It is so fun to watch your kids learn new things isn't it?  It is like there whole face glows over the excitement of reaching a major accomplishment!

The activities I chose for this month was pretty simple.

The first one we did was I had him get some of his matchbox cars out and we did some tire tracks on a piece of paper with some black paint.  He thought it was neat that his tractor tires were different than his car and truck.  Of course we talked about why.  Which brought up the discussion of when our pastor would be taking him out in the field.

The next thing we did was to make a race car out of an empty toilet paper roll.  I used the end of the roll and marked out 4 wheels.  He painted his car red and his wheels black.  Then, I used paper brads and attached the wheels to the toilet roll using a hole punch.  He wanted his name and and the number 8 put on it.  What boy doesn't like race cars!  If you make the brads lose enough, the wheels will spin.

The last thing we did was some fun with ramps!  I had him get some of his Duplo blocks out and we built them at different heights and marked how far the car went with masking tape.  He had a blast!!

All in all a fun month again!!  I think we went on more rabbit trails with this months topic then we normally do, but isn't that when the real learning begins!!

Lesson 95 the first triumvirate

Hand print pirate.

Answers in Genesis: The Human Body Unit 2 Joints & Muscles

This is the second part of unit 2 in the Human Body book by Answers in Genesis.

Lesson 7 Joints

We looked at different joints around the house.  The door hinge.

The sliding door.

Showing some joints of his own!

We also talked about our elbows during this lesson.  The straw demonstrates why our elbows have wrinkles.  Without wrinkles they would not bend correctly.

The extra skin is there, just like the flexible part of the straw, to bend  with out blocking the straw or breaking the bone.

Lesson 8-9 The muscular system and the different types of muscles.

First we looked at our biceps and triceps

Then we talked about how our muscles and brains are always working together.  Things that we practice doing a lot of, we get better at.  We did some experiments to understand this concept.

The first one was jumping on one foot.  By the 3rd time, he had more than doubled his time from the 1st time.

23 seconds hopping on one foot!

Then we did an experiment with a yard stick.  I had him put his thumb and pointer about a half inch apart and I dropped a yard stick in between them.  We then set out to see how long it took him to catch it.

1st time 22 inches!!

2nd time 10 inches!!

Lesson 10 Hands and Feet

I don't know what happened with this picture, but it was of him picking up a lego with his hand.

I then had him pick up the same lego with his feet.  Took him some time.

I put a pencil down and he had it in no time!  He has toes like his momma!!!

Blessings!!
